The most common way to stop receiving texts from a reputable business or organization is by replying with the single word "STOP". Companies with professional messaging systems recognize this command and will automatically remove you from their contact list. This works best for businesses you've previously interacted with, like a retail store or a service provider you've signed up for.



How to Safely Report Spam and Scams to 7726

It is crucially important to never reply with "STOP" to a suspicious or unknown sender. Doing so confirms that your number is active and can lead to more spam. The safest way to handle these messages is to report them to your carrier.


Here's how to report unwanted spam text messages to 7726:

  1. Open the spam text message you wish to report.

  2. Forward the entire message to the number 7726 (which spells SPAM on a phone keypad).

  3. You may receive a reply asking for the sender's phone number. Forward the original number to complete the report.


Reporting spam to 7726 helps wireless carriers identify and block malicious numbers, protecting you and others from future scams.



Blocking Unwanted Numbers/SPAM on Your Smartphone

For persistent spammers or scammers, blocking the number is the most direct solution. The process is a little different depending on your mobile operating system.


How to Block a Number on iPhone

  1. Open the Messages app and find the conversation with the spam number.

  2. Tap the name or phone number at the top of the screen.

  3. Tap the "info" button (the circled "i").

  4. Scroll down and select "Block this Caller."


How to Block a Number on Android

  1. Open the Messages app and tap on the unwanted text.

  2. Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the screen.

  3. Select "Details" from the menu.

  4. Choose the option "Block & report spam" or simply "Block".
