How to Create a Login.gov or ID.me Account for Government Websites

If you have tried to check your Social Security benefits online, file for Medicare, or access the IRS website, you may have been asked to sign in with Login.gov or ID.me. This can feel confusing at first. This guide walks you through what these accounts are and how to set one up step by step.

What Is Login.gov?

Login.gov is a free account that lets you sign in to many different government websites using one username and password. This is called Single Sign On, or SSO. Instead of creating a separate account for every government agency, you create one Login.gov account and use it everywhere it is accepted.

Login.gov is used by agencies such as the Social Security Administration, the IRS, and Veterans Affairs.

What Is ID.me?

ID.me works the same way as Login.gov. It is also a free account that verifies who you are so you can safely access government services online. Some agencies use Login.gov, and others use ID.me. Medicare.gov, for example, currently requires an ID.me account.

You do not get to choose which one to use. The website you are trying to access will tell you which login system it requires.

Why Do Government Websites Require These Accounts?

These accounts exist to protect you. They confirm that you are really you before allowing access to private information like your Social Security number, medical records, or tax details. This extra step helps prevent scammers from accessing your personal benefits.

How to Create a Login.gov Account

Follow these steps to set up your Login.gov account.

Step 1: Go to the Correct Website

Go to the government website you are trying to use, such as ssa.gov. Look for a button that says "Sign In with Login.gov."

Step 2: Enter Your Email Address

Type in your email address and create a password. Write your password down somewhere safe.

Step 3: Confirm Your Email

Login.gov will send a confirmation code to your email. Open your email, find the code, and type it into the website.

Step 4: Set Up a Second Verification Method

Login.gov requires a second way to confirm it is you. The easiest option for most seniors is to choose "text message" or "phone call." Enter your phone number, and Login.gov will send you a code to type in.

Step 5: You Are Done

Once your phone number is confirmed, your Login.gov account is ready. You can now use this same username and password on other websites that accept Login.gov.

How to Create an ID.me Account

Follow these steps to set up your ID.me account.

Step 1: Go to the Correct Website

Go to the website that requires ID.me, such as Medicare.gov. Look for a button that says "Sign In with ID.me" or "Create an ID.me account."

Step 2: Enter Your Email and Create a Password

Type in your email address and choose a password. Write it down in a safe place.

Step 3: Confirm Your Identity

ID.me will ask you to verify your identity. This usually involves taking a photo of your driver's license or state ID, along with a selfie using your phone or computer camera. This step proves that you are the person on the ID.

Step 4: Add a Second Verification Method

Just like Login.gov, ID.me will ask for a phone number to send you a verification code by text message.

Step 5: You Are Done

Once your identity is confirmed, your ID.me account is ready to use.

Tips for a Smooth Sign Up

  • Use an email address that you check regularly.

  • Write down your username and password and keep it somewhere safe at home.

  • Have your phone nearby, since both systems send verification codes by text.

  • For ID.me, have your driver's license or state ID ready before you start.

  • Set aside 15 to 20 minutes so you are not rushed.
